Rain Delay Pushes Back Re-Opening of
NOLA Bark to September 11
Because of all the recent rain, our contractor has not been able to complete the scheduled improvements to NOLA City Bark. Work has been stalled since August 27 and we have two more areas to plant and more white sand to spread once it can be delivered.
Not only has the ground been too wet to support the construction equipment needed in the park, but our contractor hasn’t been able to harvest any of the additional Bermuda sod we need to patch the remaining bare areas.
We project that we should be able to reopen on Saturday, September 11. If we can get back into the park any earlier, we promise to notify you.
Here’s our progress to date: the small dog park is draining very well with the installation of the new drain and sod. Also, the area behind the hill in the large dog park is also greatly improved with fill and sod. The area around the "pit" and the cypress tree in the large yard need a little more work, but the drain, fill and most of the sod has been installed. Finally, the area along Magnolia has an additional drain and has been filled.
We appreciate your patience with this delay as we work hard to keep the park in tip-top shape for canines and humans!

In the interim, you might enjoy walking your leashed dog along Roosevelt Mall and City Park Avenue or around the new Big Lake trail in front of NOMA. Roosevelt Mall and Big Lake have both human and canine drinking fountains as well as misters and showers to help you and your pet stay cool. Remember to bring a bag to clean up after your pet.
You can contact us at info@nolacitybark.org or at 483-9377 between 10 am and 2 pm, Monday - Friday for updated information on the closing and reopening. We will keep you informed via Bark Bits, Facebook, our website and by posting messages in the kiosk at the dog park.

New feature ‘Bark Bits’ - the latest updated information about NOLA City Bark

Please familiarize yourself with the NOLA City Bark rules. They have been developed with the help of Veterinarians and other professionals who are experts on animal behavior and are designed to protect the safety of both pets and humans. Please remember that only spayed and neutered dogs over the age of 6 months can enter the park. Additionally children under the age of 8 are not allowed in the park. This rule is for their safety in a setting where dogs are off leash and could knock down or injure a young child.
Please help us enforce the rules – by making sure that no dogs or owners without permits are allowed enter the park through gates left open or by people opening the gates to admit non-members whose pets may not be neutered. Common sense and safety dictates that everyone follow the NOLA City Bark rules to make sure that no one unwittingly creates a situation that results in injury to pets or people.
Thanks for your support and Woof!

Ochsner Donates Funds to Name Walking Trail;
Joins Other Major Sponsors
Ochsner Health System has donated $25,000 to secure the naming rights for the landscaped Walking Trail through NOLA City Bark. With this generous donation, Ochsner joins City Bark’s other major donors who have supported various areas and features of the dog park -- City Park, Friends of City Park, Raising Cane’s, the Francis B. McDonough Charitable Foundation, Louis and Sally Roussel and Lakeview Veterinary Hospital.
The Ochsner Walking Trail is a concrete path that runs along the perimeter of the park. It is perfect for both human and canine strolling and fitness walking. The Trail parallels the large and small dog runs and also winds through quiet, landscaped areas of the park that will feature stone benches for relaxing -– as well as people– and dog-watching.
“Ochsner is proud to lend a helping hand to man, and woman's, best friend by sponsoring the dog walking trail in NOLA City Bark" says Juliette Thompson, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Public Affairs for Ochsner Health System. "Exercise is an important part of dogs and humans lives and a brisk walk, everyday, has psychological and cardiovascular benefits to both," she explains.

Advice from the CDC on how to prevent spread of salmonella
from pets to human and vice versa
The CDC said parents could take some simple steps to
keep themselves and their pet-loving children safe:
-
Regularly wash your pet’s feeding bowls to prevent growth
of bacteria.
-
Thoroughly wash your hands and your children’s hands with
soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after handling dry pet
foods, including pet treats.
-
Avoid letting any human food and utensils come into contact with
pet food.
-
Make sure to thoroughly clean any counters and utensils you use
to prepare your pet’s dinner.
-
Handle litter boxes carefully, and always thoroughly wash your
hands and keep the area around the litter box clean.
